John Backus : -

This month John Backus passed away. John Backus was the Lead Developer of Fortran (FORmula TRANslation) language. Fortran was the first high level language and made the life of programmers alot easier. Basically the design involves development of a translator that will translate instructions written in a language easily understood by human beings to a language understood by machines. According to research the lines of code to do the same task was reduced by 20 times with the advent of Fortran. The programs written by Fortran are damn fast and that is the reason of its survival till date. Fortran has been widely used by Scientists and Engineers for Numerical Computing.
John Backus was also the inventor of Backus-Naur Form (BNF) , which is the universally used notation to define formal language syntax. John has done significant research in Functional Programming Languages and is the creator of FP and FL languages as well. He was also involved with ALGOL language development.
